I recently had the privilege of having a guest speaker named, Travis Axton as a representative from the Peace Corp organization come to my English class in Chico, California.  Travis came into my class and informed everyone about the Peace Corp.  He told us about his experience when he was sent to Zambia, Africa, where he was to learn about there culture, and speak language.  While Travis was in Zambia, he helped inform the village people about the issues that they are effected with in their everyday lives such as; AIDS/ HIV, education, forestry, and information technology. Travis said that he had set two main goals for his trip into Zambia and it was to have basic cultural exchange and develop trust between the village people and himself.

On the website, http://www.peacecorps.gov/, it initiates the basic questions for someone who is interesting in the Peace Corp program like, What the Peace Corp is? Who volunteers? Where the volunteers go? The Peace Corps works in over 70 countries around the world. Peace Corps volunteers work with governments, schools, non-profit organizations, non-government organizations, and entrepreneurs in the areas of education, health, HIV/AIDS, business, information technology, agriculture, and the environment. The program has three main goals that it has set for it’s volunteers, “first helping the people of interested countries in meeting their need for trained men and women, second helping promote a better understanding of Americans on the part of the peoples served, and finally, helping promote a better understanding of other peoples on the part of Americans.”  The website also introduces basic news that the Peace Corp is involved in for that month.  For instance, this month the “Peace Corp is nominated for best government website for the 12th annual webby award on April 11, 2008.”  The website also gives addition resources to those who are interested if they are children, family members, donors, grad students, or teens.  The “Peace Corps has established partnerships with colleges and universities across the United States that offer academic credit and financial incentives to Volunteers during or after Peace Corps service. Master's International allows you to incorporate Peace Corps service into a master's degree program at more than 50 colleges and universities,” which will benefit college graduates who are interested in a Masters program.

This website offers a lot of feedback on the governmental program, and a lot of options of things you can do in the Peace Corp.  The Peace Corp website is very informative for someone who is interested.  “Life is calling. How far will you go?”
